We are continuing to ramp up our fight against government overreach and abuse of power, by standing up to the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission to promote informed conservation and responsible development of the Bay shoreline for the enjoyment of all.
Our fight is well underway, and we won’t stop until the BCDC undergoes a complete overhaul. We will soon submit to the California State Auditor staff, which is now conducting a detailed review of the BCDC and its enforcement behavior, compliance to its mission, funding and operational issues, and its overly bureaucratic structure.
We will recommend to the State Auditor the BCDC governance structure be completely stripped and replaced to increase efficiency. The BCDC now has 27 unpaid commissioners and alternates who “serve” on the commission’s board. (For the sake of comparison, the BCDC has nearly twice the number of commissioners as the California Coastal Commission, which oversees the entire California coastline of about 1,100 miles.)
The BCDC’s 27 unpaid commissioners should be replaced by four or five professional commissioners who can focus more on overseeing the BCDC and help coordinate its activities with other local, state and federal agencies.
The current executive team, in addition, must also be replaced with qualified leaders who will actually fulfill and sustain the intended BCDC mission of protecting the Bay Area environment. There needs to be an executive management in place with a staff that is properly qualified to determine real environmental issues around disputes and to promote the right improvements that support the Bay.
We will make sure our voice is heard by the State Auditor, and we will continue to fight on behalf of all Bay Area residents, tourists, business owners, and employees.
But we can’t do this alone; we need your help! The Alliance is strongest when we work together.
Please consider making a donation – link at the bottom of the page – to help fund our advocacy efforts, helping to ensure the Bay shoreline remains a place that can be enjoyed by everyone. We believe in informed conservation and responsible development and we need a government that’s willing to work for – not against – the people it’s in place to serve.
Please join us, and donate today.
Thank you for your continued support!
